A new report estimates how much DC-area apartment renters need to earn in order to afford their monthly rent.
Zillow recently found that renters need to have an income of approximately $90,730 in order to afford the median apartment rent of $1,850 a month in the DC region. Single-family home renters need to earn closer to $120,000 a year.
Nationally, renters need to earn about $80,000 to afford the median asking rent of approximately $2,000 a month.
"Nationwide, renters today need to earn more than $80,000 to comfortably afford the typical rental, up from $60,000 just five years ago," the report stated. "In eight major metro areas, renters now need to make six figures to comfortably afford rent."
